What Are Wedge Anchors?

Wedge anchors are one of the most reliable and widely used concrete anchors for fastening materials to solid concrete. They have been trusted for decades by electrical, mechanical, plumbing, structural, and low-voltage contractors because they provide exceptional holding strength while remaining quick and easy to install.

Unlike some concrete anchors, wedge anchors are designed only for solid concrete. They should not be used in concrete block, brick, or other hollow base materials. They can also be installed through metal pan decking that has a structural concrete slab poured over it.

Wedge anchors are available in several finishes to match your environment:

  • Zinc plated for general indoor applications
  • Mechanical galvanized for additional corrosion resistance
  • 304 stainless steel for outdoor or damp environments
  • 316 stainless steel for highly corrosive or marine environments

How to Install a Wedge Anchor

Installing a wedge anchor is simple when the proper procedures are followed.

  1. Drill a hole the same diameter as the anchor. For example, a 1/2" wedge anchor requires a 1/2" masonry drill bit.
  2. Drill the hole approximately 1/2 inch deeper than the required embedment depth.
  3. Remove all dust and debris using compressed air, a wire brush, or vacuum.
  4. Insert the anchor through the fixture and tap it into the hole until the washer and nut are seated.
  5. Tighten the nut to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification.
Installation Tip:

When installing into a slab-on-grade, drilling completely through the slab makes future removal much easier. Simply remove the nut and washer, then drive the anchor below the surface if the fixture ever needs to be removed.

Proper Embedment and Edge Distance

Correct embedment depth is critical for achieving the anchor's published holding values. Although requirements vary by manufacturer and anchor diameter, a common recommendation is an embedment depth of approximately four times the anchor diameter.

Always verify the manufacturer's specifications for your specific anchor.

Edge distance is equally important. Installing a wedge anchor too close to the edge of a slab can cause the concrete to crack or break away under load. If you're fastening into cracked concrete, make sure the wedge anchor has been tested and approved for cracked concrete applications.

Limitations of Wedge Anchors

  • Designed for solid concrete only
  • Cannot be used in concrete block or hollow masonry
  • More difficult to remove than concrete screw anchors
  • Requires proper edge spacing
  • Permanent expansion design makes relocation difficult
