What Are PAT Extension Poles?
Extension poles for powder actuated tools are specialized attachments that extend the reach of your Ramset, Hilti, Simpson, DeWalt, or other PAT tools used in construction. Powder actuated tools themselves are high-powered fastening devices that drive nails or pins into concrete and steel using controlled explosive charges. This process is sometimes called direct fastening or forced entry.
By attaching your tool to an extension pole, you can perform overhead fastening from floor level—making it easier to access ceilings, beams, and other elevated surfaces without the need for a ladder, lift, or scaffold in many cases.
Why Use an Extension Pole for PAT Tools?

One of the biggest advantages of using extension poles is reducing fall risk. Instead of climbing ladders or using lifts, installers can remain safely on the ground while completing overhead fastening tasks. In some cases, an extension pole is the only way to access the deck due to other installed fixtures. The same applies when ceiling grid work is already in place.

Extension poles can greatly increase productivity by reducing trips up and down ladders and minimizing repositioning time. For example, on a large corporate campus project, one worker prepared ceiling grid wire while another followed with a PAT and extension pole to install cable supports. Types of Extension Poles Available
Fixed-Length Extension Poles
A fixed-length, durable fiberglass pole with an actuator at one end. A 6-foot length is the most common. Longer lengths are available, but shipping costs are often prohibitive.
Telescoping Extension Poles
Telescoping poles that adjust in 1-foot increments, with some extending up to 18 feet. These are used with specific tools that fire with pressure on contact.
Sectional Extension Poles
Sectional poles that include a base with a trigger and optional extensions. These are also used with specific types of tools.
How to Choose the Right Extension Pole
- Compatibility – Extension poles for PAT tools are tool-specific. You need to know both the manufacturer and the model number. For example, you cannot simply order a pole for a Ramset or Hilti tool—you must match the exact model, as different tools require different extension poles.
- Length Considerations (Fixed-Length Poles) – The most common fixed length is 6 feet, which covers most applications. Longer poles are available, but they present challenges. Shipping costs for poles longer than 6 feet can be nearly as much as the pole itself. In these cases, a telescoping PAT system is often a better option. Additionally, longer fixed poles may be awkward in certain situations, sometimes requiring the user to bend down to operate the tool.
Applications for PAT Extension Poles
- Suspended Ceiling Installation – This is the most common use for PAT extension poles.
- Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) – Mechanical applications include installing threaded rod hangers. Electrical contractors use extension poles to install ceiling grid wires for supporting fixtures and power distribution.
- Data Communication / Structured Cabling / Low Voltage – Low-voltage contractors often use PAT extension poles to create cable pathways using ceiling grid wire and threaded rod.
